Department of Social Sciences and History

The FDU Department of Social Sciences and History offers a 33-credit Master of Arts in Political Science aimed at deepening your understanding of American and global politics — a valuable asset for careers in such fields as government, politics, lobbying, research, and journalism, as well as for advanced graduate study.

As a student in the program, you will receive advanced training in political science and political science research methods, and develop critical skills in information and technical literacy. You will gain a well-rounded education and understanding of the dynamic changes currently taking place in the international community. You can also tailor your studies to your career or academic interests by choosing from a wide range of electives in political science, history and criminal justice.

The program is offered on FDU’s Metropolitan Campus in Teaneck, NJ — just minutes from the heart of New York City. Our small class sizes promote dialogue and collaboration between students and faculty. Our faculty bring real-world experience to the classroom, providing you with the mentorship and hands-on research opportunities needed to advance in your career.

You will have additional opportunities to gain experience through these valuable resources:

      • FDU has a long-standing relationship with the United Nations and is accredited by the UN as a non-governmental organization, or NGO.
      • FDU’s FDU Poll™ research center based on our Florham Campus conducts polling, surveys and other studies on politics, society, popular culture, consumer and economic trends.

My name is Kyle Kattleman. I'm an associate professor of Political Science in the Department of Social Sciences and History. The Department of Social Sciences and History covers a wide range of disciplines within the social sciences, including political science, anthropology, sociology, as well as history. We are spread across both campuses in Madison and Teaneck. And we encompass a wide array of disciplines from scholars, who have won numerous awards, both in teaching and service. At the undergraduate level, we tell you what we know. And at the graduate level, we teach you how to know what we don't know. So we teach at the graduate level students to become active researchers to generate knowledge for the rest of scholarship. It's a skill set that allows you to transition to a number of different professional areas, whether you want to be a pollster for a political campaign, whether you want to be a policy analysts, whether you want to work for a think tank or a nonprofit, or even if you want to do something outside of the political or policy realm. Knowing how to research knowing how to write, knowing how to generate new knowledge is the strength that we're going to teach you in our graduate program. The class sizes are very small at the graduate level. So it's a dialogue between the professor and the students about research techniques. What specific theories mean? How can we test specific theories? One way that we help our students acquire this is that I oftentimes I will co-author papers with students, so that they have an actual hands-on experience working with a professional, who does this for a living, and how to actually research and write. The students will be advised by the actual faculty. And so that's what separates a school like FDU, apart from larger schools. The tri-state area is a tremendous place to live in terms of the viewpoints, the diversity, the culture, and the job opportunities that you're going to be exposed to. So FDU has an NGO partnership with the United Nations. That is something that if you lived outside of this region, you just simply wouldn't have. And so with that natural closeness, there is a connection between this institution, and a lot of other institutions that you wouldn't have if you were outside of this area. If you're interested, I'd love to talk to you. Please feel free to reach out. You can tour the campus. You can speak to me in person. You can even sit in in one of my classes, if you'd like.
