Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice

The Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice at FDU offers a 36-credit Master of Arts in Criminal Justice designed to help you gain the necessary skills and credentials to advance your career in law enforcement, public policy, security and intelligence, courts and corrections, or victim advocacy. The M.A. in Criminal Justice also provides a solid preparation for law school or doctoral studies.

Key attributes of the M.A. in Criminal Justice:

Flexible: You can choose from full- or part-time studies, with classes offered in the late afternoon, evenings, and online. Full-time students can earn their degree in 18 months. Part-time students can graduate in less than two years.

Relevant: Our distinguished faculty bring strong research and teaching backgrounds to the classroom. Many also work in the criminal justice system and can offer the most current and practice-oriented learning experiences.

Career-Focused: Coursework bridges theory and practice to provide you with advanced knowledge and understanding of the U.S. criminal justice system.

Ideal Location: Onsite classes are held at FDU’s Metropolitan Campus. Located just minutes from the heart of the nation’s largest metropolitan area — New York City — you’ll find rich opportunities for field-based learning, networking and careers in criminal justice.

Hands-on Experience: Graduate internships offer real-world learning experiences with our partners at criminal justice agencies, non-profit and private organizations at the federal, state and local levels.

Hi, I'm Dr. Elizabeth Panuccio, Deputy Chair of the Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice. I'm really excited to share with you what our department has to offer. One of the things I value most about our department is that we offer programs on both New Jersey campuses, and each campus has its own distinct culture. I also really value our diverse student population and there's truly a place for everyone in our department. The department of criminology and criminal justice is housed within the Becton College of Arts and Sciences. The master's degree is ideal for students who wish to pursue academic careers or would like to advance in their professional positions. Master's students have access to really exciting research opportunities, and they serve as research assistants for faculty members. They also have access to a really exciting internship program, which has placed students at over 250 prestigious organizations, including the FBI and the DEA. Many of our students have been offered part-time and full-time positions after completing their internships. Students in our master's degree program have access to a strong alumni network. The alumni provide internship opportunities, professional opportunities, and they often come, and speak in our classes. We also provide teaching development for students who are interested in pursuing academic careers. We provide guidance with lesson plan development, and we give students the opportunity to teach at the undergraduate level. Finally, we offer flexible learning modalities. We offer courses that are fully online in person and hybrid. And we offer courses in the fall, winter, spring and summer. Our department has very strong ties to industry. We often have professional organizations coming into our classrooms to conduct preliminary interviews and to recruit from our student population. Our adjuncts have very unique experiences in the criminal justice system. We currently have adjuncts, who are working for the FBI, working as prosecutors, defense attorneys, and we've had adjuncts from prestigious institutions like the DEA. Our student centered environment allows us to get to know our students on a first name basis, and allows us to establish close working relationships. Our student centered environment also allows our students to establish close relationships with their peers. We invite you to take a tour of our campus, or to sit in on one of our classes and experience what we have to offer. If you have any questions related to the university or questions about admissions, please contact our Admissions Office. If you would like to learn more about our criminology or criminal justice programs, please contact me by email or phone. We're always happy to speak with students on the phone through email or on zoom.
